Mike Follmer, owner of R&D Yamaha Team Follmer, announced that he has entered two teams aboard new Yamaha FX SHO Wave Runners in the Fourth Annual APBA Mark Hahn Memorial Havasu 300 Endurance Race being contested on February 23, 2008 at Lake Havasu, Arizona. This event will mark the first time that the new FX SHO Wave Runner, with its 1.8 liter supercharged Yamaha Marine engine, has been in endurance competition. This 300-mile endurance race with its fuel stops and rider changes is the perfect place to debut the FX SHO with its more powerful supercharged engine together with a lighter than the competition overall weight advantage.
Additionally, Yamaha Motor Corporation U.S.A., Inc. has signed on to be the Presenting Sponsor of the February 23, 2008 endurance race. This announcement is seen by people involved in PWC racing as a positive endorsement for endurance lifestyle events where there are classes for every type of boat and level of rider expertise.
"Last year we received an overwhelmingly positive response after partnering with our local Lake Havasu dealer, Walt's, at the Third Annual Mark Hahn Memorial," said Andrew Cullen, Yamaha Watercraft Marketing Manager, "This year we look forward to using this successful and growing event to showcase our newly introduced FX SHO that features a 1.8 liter Supercharged, Super High Output Yamaha Marine Engine, the largest displacement engine in the PWC industry."
The "Longest Continuous PWC Race" is very appealing to today's PWC manufacturer's for a variety of reasons, the most prominent being that this lifestyle event allows families as well as veteran racers to compete at their own level where everyone walks away a winner having just competed and completed this grueling 300 mile event. There are so many variables in this event, from fuel stops, rider changes, rough water conditions and attrition that it is very possible that a stock boat with an inexperienced racer could be the only one running at the end, and walk away with the Overall Trophy.
Mike Follmer will be riding the team's primary entry in the Pro Am 4-Stroke Open Class and will be sharing riding duties with Tony Beck, the owner of Walt's Motorsports in Lake Havasu City who is a long time supporter of this event. Walt's will also be joining all the other Team Follmer sponsors in providing support for the team's effort to once again capture the overall championship for Yamaha. The team's second entry will feature an all female and all Lake Havasu resident team of Nicky Goudreau and Lark Schmitt. Nicky and Lark have both raced in this event since its beginning and carried away several APBA National Class Championships. They have distinguished themselves as champions on stand-up and sit-down boats in APBA Regional and National events.
With Yamaha Factory support, R&D's Bill Chapin's engineering expertise and the support of everyone at Walt's Motorsports; R&D Yamaha Team Follmer is uniquely positioned and prepared to make an excellent two boat assault on the championship. Together with the slightest amount of racing luck, the Yamaha FX SHO Wave Runner will receive its first National Endurance title.
