"I wanted to let you know that you're the reason why I got into writing," I said. "In fact, I'm leaving for Florida to go work for a car magazine in a week. I just wanted to thank you."
I was standing at the head of a long line on the second floor of a Barnes & Noble in Huntington Beach, California, shaking New York Times Best Seller Clive Cussler's hand. At 25-years-old, I was hired to pack up my things, leave school during the middle of finals week (most of my professors would let me go without testing, saying, "Finally, a student is doing something with their literature degree!"), and drive 2,600-plus miles to Tampa, Florida to begin my life as an automotive journalist...
